Salisbury 10

6th May 200710 miles, road, "undulating"
Venue: Salisbury Leisure Centre.
Travelling time: 40 mins.
Weather: Warm.
Comments: Scenic but hard run, several sharp climbs in 2nd half.
Rosemarie's "comeback" race.
Still lacking strength and speed but running again - hooray.
Age-groups: Up to MV70, FV60
Results:
Rosemarie: 1h:23m:16s (1st v60 - £15 voucher)
Alec: 1h:32m:20s (3rd v70)


Needles XC half-marathon

3rd June 2007Off-road, steep hills; also full marathon option
Venue: Freshwater Leisure Centre, Isle of Wight.
Travelling time: 30mins ferry Lymington - Yarmouth.
15mins in Neil's car to Freshwater.
Weather: Sunny.
Comments: Very scenic, with gates and stiles en-route.
Few marshals except in town, but route marking very clear.
Rosemarie managed to complete it, though had to walk up steeper hills.
Age-groups: None, just 1st M and F prizes

Warminster Forest 10

24th Jun 2007Road/forest track, "undulating"
Venue: Warminster cricket ground.
Travelling time: 1hr 15mins.
Weather: Cloudy, slight showers.
Comments: Continuing Rosemarie's comeback.
Alec took it cautiously with dodgy knee.
3 miles on tarmac lanes, 4 miles in the forest, 3 miles road (downhill).
Another tough course - 1st half mainly uphill, with long drag to 5-mile mark.
Some of the tracks very muddy after last weeks heavy rains.
Age-groups: 10-year groups up to M60 and F55
Results:
Rosemarie: 1h:22m:52s (3rd v55)
Alec: 1h:36m:36s (8th v60)


Portland 10

1st Jul 200710 mile, road, hilly
Venue: Portland.
Travelling time: 1hr 15mins.
Car park entrance height restriction (camper too high).
Weather: Sun/cloud, extremely windy.
Comments: Same course as previously:
2 circuits: 3 miles, up to top, down and round back up to start, then 7 miles, up again, then all the way down to the lighthouse and back up.
Nice blue bath towels for all finishers.
Age-groups: Awards in 5-year age-groups (up to mv70, fv60).
Results:
Rosemarie: 1h:22m:02s (1st v60 - £5 voucher)
Alec felt dizzy on way there,
so decided shouldn't try running.


New Forest Alternative 10

7th Jul 200710 miles, road/track
Venue: New Park Farm, Brockenhurst.
Travelling time: 30 mins.
Weather: Warm.
Comments: Saturday evening pre-NF10 club championship.
Changed course in 1st mile - better, as avoided farmyard.
Age-groups: 1st/2nd/3rd in 10-year groups (40/50/60/70).
Results:
Rosemarie 1st v60, in 1hr:23m:07s

Trail Serentaise

15th Jul 200715k forest trail (1st and last 1k on road)
Venue: Serent, Brittany (France).
Travelling time: Ferry Poole to Cherbourg.
Approx ?? miles drive to Serent (near Vannes).
Camped overnight en-route.
Weather: Hot, humid.
Comments: Small friendly event (about 200 entries). Also 30k option.
Narrow trails, so not easy to overtake.
Dodgy bit in old slate quarry - very slippery after rain.
Age-groups: 1st/2nd/3rd in 10-year groups (40/50/60/70).
Results:
Rosemarie: 1h:26m:43s (2nd v60, 5th lady)
Alec: 1h:53m:40s (2nd v70)


Cote de Granit Rose

22nd Jul 200720k road/sandy track
Venue: Perros-Guirec to Trebeurden, Brittany (France).
On north coast; run in alternate direction each year.
Travelling time: Ferry Poole to Cherbourg.
Camped at Trebeurden for race finish.
Buses provided to take runners to start.
Weather: Warm, sun/cloud.
Comments: 'Serious' race - no fancy-dress/fun-runners. Also 10k/3k options.
Well organised - roads closed to traffic.
Crowded start, straight up very steep hill for 1st k.
Age-groups: 1st in 10-year groups (40/50/60/70).
Results:
Rosemarie: 1h:46m:31s (1st v60)
Alec: 2h:04m:50s (1st v70)


Stur half

5th Aug 2007half-marathon, road, hilly
Venue: Sturminster Newton.
Car park in field at finish; start in town centre.
Travelling time: 1hr 15mins.
Lift with Chris and John Hunt (too hot for Alec)
Weather: Very hot, sunny, little breeze.
Comments: Hard run, little shade, sore feet. Steep downhill on last half mile.
Well organised, plenty of water stations, plus hose-pipe showers en-route.
10 min walk downhill to start in town, so overall uphill course.
Just pipped by 5secs for 1st v55 (not enough strength to catch up).
A few other NFR runners there.

Pewsey half

26th Aug 2007half-marathon, road, hilly
Venue: Pewsey school.
Travelling time: 1hr 15mins.
Weather: Sun/cloud, warm, light breeze.
Comments: Good run, half mile steep hill at 4 miles, last mile uphill.
Well organised, water stations at 2.5mile intervals.
Nice hot showers.

Doone Run

16th Sep 200710.1 miles, off-road, hills
Venue: Lynton, Devon.
Travelling time: about 3 hours (+pub lunch stop).
Weather: Warm, sunny.
Comments: Our 8th visit, route reverted to original start on Lynmouth seafront.
Much better, especially not having the last half-mile uphill.
10 mins slower than in 1997!
Age-groups: Up to MV65, FV60

Weymouth 10

20th Oct 200710 mile, road, hilly
Venue: Weymouth Pavillion.
Travelling time: 1hr 15mins.
Car park concession ticket for £2 at start.
Weather: Chilly, cloudy.
Comments: Too cold for vest (T-shirt and cycle shorts ok).
Same course as last time (2004):
2 flat miles round bay, 2x 3mile circuit up steep hill to campsite (with short loop in car park on 1st lap to make up distance) then undulating back down road, finally back round bay again.
Surprisingly fast (when not too windy)
Age-groups: Awards in 10-year age-groups (up to mv60, fv60).
Results:
Rosemarie: 1h:18m:45s (1st v60 - bottle of wine)


Stickler

28th Oct 200710.1 miles, off-road, hills (a.k.a Dorset 3 Peaks)
Venue: Shillingstone, Dorset.
Travelling time: about 1 hour.
Weather: Warm, wet and windy.
Comments: Same course as usual, mud not too bad, hills just as steep.
Age-groups: Up to MV60, FV60

Wimborne 10

18th Nov 200710 mile, road, hilly
Venue: Q.E.Leisure Centre, Wimborne.
Travelling time: 45mins.
Weather: Very cold, very wet, very windy.
Comments: Thermal top + knee-length bottoms - should have worn all thermals.
Similar course to last time (2004): Long walk/jog to start.
Crowded start, 1st mile downhill but couldn't get going; back up same hill at end.
Very hard 2nd half after turn back into freezing wind.
Faster than expected, as managed to tuck in behind helpful gent going into wind.
Age-groups: Awards in 10-year age-groups (up to mv60, fv55).

Xmas pud 10k

Weather: Very windy, wet.
Comments: Pleased with time considering weather conditions.
Age-groups: 5-year groups both M and F
